Self-ligating braces are an excellent example of how far technology has come in orthodontics. While they still use the basics of conventional braces, self-ligating braces operate more freely and much faster.
How do self-ligating braces work?
The technology used for self-ligating braces is based on the bracket and archwire method. Brackets are fitted to the surface of your teeth and an archwire slots into them, but there is no need for the elastics or clips to hold it in place. Instead, the brackets have a sliding mechanism which means the archwire can respond to the movement of your teeth. Using less force, and reducing the friction which can occur from the movement of conventional braces, self-ligating braces work quickly and comfortably to move your teeth into a straighter position.
How long do self-ligating braces take?
This depends on your orthodontic requirements and every case is different; however, you can expect self-ligating braces to take anywhere between 12 and 24 months.
Who are self-ligating braces for?
Self-ligating braces are suitable for most orthodontic cases and, because they are relatively aesthetically pleasing, are popular among our patients who don’t want treatment to impact on their lifestyle or appearance.
